Before we can know what we are called to do, we need some level of understanding about who we are. University Presbyterian Church was started by a group of people from Fremont Presbyterian Church who did not wish to join the Evangelical Presbyterian denomination. In 2011 the Fremont Church voted to leave the PCUSA and join the EPC, however, over 150 members did not wish to do this. The Evangelical way of understanding faith did not reflect their personal beliefs or practices. Therefore they had a decision to make. Simply leave their church and attend somewhere else or together begin a new church to carry on the PCUSA tradition. They chose to do the latter and form the University Presbyterian Church with former Fremont members who did not wish to switch denominations. This decision was a courageous act on the part of these faithful Christians, who stood firm on what they believed even though it was not popular. This is always a difficult thing to do. They believed that there were other legitimate ways to understand their faith, and they were comfortable in the PCUSA denomination. This blog will reflect our efforts to express who we are as a New Church in the PCUSA . Our name is new, but we are a continuation of the PCUSA tradition that was started over 130 years ago.
